Learning to Create Like a Kid Again

Bright colored pencils and sharpeners with shavings on a white surface.

Do you remember those days when you were a kid and you just went out and drew that picture? Built that project? Put out that lemonade stand?  Maybe it’s aging through some of the fast moving eras of my life, but this has been on my mind lately.  At some point, most people will tend to stop going and just doing the things that they want to do. Most people will start to do the things they think they are supposed to do.

Usually it’s school, job, family… These are all great things that we love having, but you tend to lose some of that spontaneous creativity and lack of caring if you should or shouldn’t do this thing. Maybe you put aside the art because you worry you’re not good enough.  Maybe you don’t build that thing because you don’t have the time. Maybe you don’t start that business because things just aren’t quite right for it at the moment.

Occasionally, you have a burst of it come back and buy some art supplies, you start a project and half finish it, or you take up a bit of a side hustle that lasts for a little while or maybe is not what you really want to do.  You then look back on all of the half finished stuff and wonder.

So, yeah, this is where I was at when looking back at my website and blog.  Just look back at the post right before this and see that it was published in 2014.  Actually 11 years ago tomorrow from the publish date of this post

I took to blogging years ago, but never kept up with it even though I do enjoy sharing my ideas and have long wanted to write more. I ended up eventually just unpublishing the posts because I didn’t want to see the half finished work I did several years ago.

But, as I was refreshing my website during this current transitional period in my life (I am currently looking for new work, full-time or contract, and trying out some new things), I said heck with it, these should be back out there. The content is dated by my current knowledge and experience and the tools I write about have went through a lot of changes, but this was part of who I was.

My goal is to bring back some of that excitement from when I was a kid and share my current and future work. I am telling myself I don’t know how much I am going to post or the exact topics I am going to post, but I will not be upset by any part of it.  I am doing the thing that I want to do and putting my ideas out there.

I’ll probably talk about my work in web development and design, my community work, tech, educational goals and info on some planned teaching I am doing, my passion for outdoor recreation, and who knows what else.  I have a few pet projects that I’m working on and I hope to detail how those progress.  It won’t all be polished or complete ideas, but that’s kind of the point.  I am getting my ideas out of my head.
Here’s to being a kid again and doing what I want to do and not what I think I am supposed to do!
